My Mother, Maker of the Home

My Mother.

 

She, to me is the epitome of what kind of mother I want to be to my children. She is patient, firm, understanding, kind, considerate, and knows the importance of quality time.

A great listener, gives sound and godly advice. 

Also, she is honest, modest, makes healthy meals (without spending much money), and creates a comfortable and welcoming home while working in the home and outside the home at our family business while, always displaying what it looks like to put God first.

 

She loves Big, prays Big, and makes food Big.  I believe it was because she loves Jesus Big

If I had to pick one character my mother possesses that I want to instill in to my motherhood it would probably be the feeling she provided for our home as a whole.  Because of her love for Jesus it was a comforting, loving, welcoming, a safe haven, the obvious presence of God, encouraging, everything you would think it would be like being around Jesus.

When I asked my brothers’ “what characteristics stands out the most about our Mother”,  they said hardworking, consistency in being present and being that calming voice.  I love that all her children see the same thing in her, even though we all have different temperaments, she was the same.

Memories

We have so many great memories as kids and most of them are of the times we spent together as a family at home.   The times my Mother stopped what she was doing to sit down beside me and play babies with me, draw pictures with me, or build a fort with me.   When we would go on walks down our road, have picnics outside in our yard, or play ball.   Our Mother took the time to invest in our relationship by being present and taking interest in our lives as we were little up to now, as adults.

Our birthday parties weren’t over the top or at the most poplar location but it was time spent with family and friends, a homemade cake big enough for all to have a slice.   Activities weren’t chosen by joining all of the sports and local events but it was time spent with the church family.

Watching my Mother become a Grandmother to my two girls and hold them for the first time was the most

OUTSTANDING day.

It was the day I knew they both would get to feel the love of a special woman who is such a blessing to her family and to

those around her.

I am so incredibly thankful for the role my Mother played in our family and the example she set for her children.  I pray I

love Jesus BIG, like her so everything else can fall into its place and eventually set an example for my girls as well.

Healthy Easy Snacks

I feel like my children are always asking for a snack.  Is this just me?

I don’t want to constantly feed them prepackaged snacks all the time.  Don’t get me wrong, at one point we were living off of snacks because we were always on the go with our little one in the hospital for three months.   Sometimes life can feel like survival mode.  Now that things have slowed down and we are obviously home more we can choose more healthy, yet also easy prep snacks.

Some of these ideas will take some prep-work in the beginning of the week but then it is a quick pull from the fridge snack. These are easily adapted to or already dairy/gluten free. We had to be dairy free for over four years and have complied a decent list.   Hope you enjoy our favorite go-to snacks and it inspires you to make at least one.

  • CLEMENTINES
  • APPLES & NUT BUTTER We also like to add coconut flakes or cocoa nibs
  • BERRIES WITH COCONUT MILK WHIPPED CREAM OR YOGURT
  • SOUR PATCH GRAPES Have you seen these yet?  Here’s a link for the recipe.  If you are not a recipe follower like me, this is what you do:  Juice limes over grapes, place in refrigerator for about 10 minutes. Take out and cover with coconut or monk fruit sugar.  Place in freezer for a couple hours and enjoy.  Please remember it is recommended for children under 4 to have their grapes cut.  From there it is determined by maturity and awareness/proximity of parent/supervisor.
  • BANANA WITH NUT BUTTER AND CHOCOLATE CHIPS (these are my childhood favorite)
  • KALE CHIPS
  • CARROTS/CELERY/CUCUMBER AND DIP 

3. Prep Snacks:

What a blessing it is, even to have options to snacks.   We thank God everyday for the food we have available to us that helps to sustain and keep us healthy and strong.  Praying these snacks help your family stay healthy and strong as well and give you a little ease in physical and mental prep.  I know for me it can be hard to think about snacks when exhausted so I’ve compiled the list on one page you can print out (see below).  Along with a weekly meal prep to write out the snacks available that week and a yummy PB Ball Recipe Card. At the Home of Martha and Mary

38 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”

41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one.  Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.””

At different times in my life, I have been able to relate to both of these women.  

 

As a teenager I related to Mary wanting to be at the feet of Jesus.   As it turned in to motherhood I found myself relating more and more to Martha, wanting to be in the kitchen or cleaning or having to say “no” to playing with my children.   Well, maybe not necessarily wanting to be in the kitchen but telling myself “I NEEDED to be”.

I have a strong desire to keep a neat and clean house.  I put pressure on myself that I HAVE to or I will not be a good mom or that I am letting my family down.   Never has my family put that pressure on me and never have I consistently been able to achieve it.  

There are times we start running around like Martha trying to get everything done just right, but quickly forget:

–  Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.  In all your ways acknowledge him and he shall direct your paths.” 

Matt 6:33 “Seek first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all things shall be added unto you.

What both Mary and Martha were doing were God’s work but we need to find a balance and to remember what is most important.  When we can focus on, spend time with, teach and train others (our children especially) about God, over focusing on how clean our homes are we can take a step back and allow God to lead our days.

I love the saying an elderly lady at our church stated, “your home should be clean enough to healthy and dirty enough to be happy”.    I should probably hang that up in my kitchen as a kind reminder for myself. 

It can be a daily struggle to have a balance with the two, but here are a few TIPS I have found to help keep the balance. 

 

5 Tips for Balance:

 

1. Pare down your belongings.  There are so many podcasts, TV series, websites, books, and even Molly’s post last week touched on this very subject.  These can help you pare down to what you need.  It makes for a quick cleanup and less “mess”.  There will still be toys on the floor, dishes on the counter, beds to be made, floors to be vacuumed, but this is because you are living life.  Less stuff will help make the clean up more manageable and less stressful for all involved.  Personally, it also helps me mentally.   I don’t see “stuff” everywhere on everything.  Clutter also clutters my brain and ability to feel relaxed. 

2. Getting your kids involved in chores.  Melinda talked about this in her post on working for the Lord.  If your children are small like mine, you’re still doing a lot of the work.  Being specific and starting small by having them pick up the blue toys, fill the basket, or pick up 10 toys, will help get them more involved.  Work together in the beginning, to teach them how and where to put the toys, or you’ll find the toys transferred to the floor in the other room.  Sing a clean-up song or choose another song to play and try to finish cleaning by the time the song is over. 

3. Include them in the process.  Having them get involved in something that they can feel like they are a part of the family, like helping you set the table or cut up veggies.  Here are some great kid knives.  Obviously, they would still need to be supervised. The other day we were making pancakes and one ended up looking like a fish.  We were able to talk about Jonah and the big fish.  We talked about how Jonah did not want to listen and obey God when God told him to go to Ninevah.    When we can teach our children Bible stories we can be in the word as well and gain wisdom and reminders as to how we are supposed to live. 

4. Have a morning “spot” where you can spend 5 or 10 minutes.  Have your bible right there sitting, waiting for you each morning, or even waiting for you when you have a quick quiet minute.  When my girls were even younger 5-10 minutes were hard to find.  But, when trying to find those little moments, it was important to have it set up already.  Finding a bible, devotional book, podcast, or music that helps you focus on God and get connected.  Pray throughout the day.  Look for God’s presence around you: in the morning light, the birds chirping, the sunny warm spring day.   Create a morning playlist with songs you have chosen to start your day with.   I also created a simple prayer request and praises board in my kitchen that I glance at and can start praying while cleaning, cooking or grabbing a snack.  I will link at the bottom as a freebie for you, if you wish to add to your home as well. 

5. One more thing I will mention is getting up before your children. It is a great time to have alone with God.  It wasn’t until recent that I actually was able to experience it.   I still had a nursing through the night toddler which makes getting up before your children nearly impossible.  Dear Mothers who are in that stage in life, please know, sometimes you get in survival mode and you need sleep.  This is where tip number 4 is important because you are finding time with God in the cracks throughout your day, you are setting yourself up for success by already having a spot with everything ready.   

Even when doing these tips, it doesn’t always make it easy. 

 

After a while I tend to get frustrated because I feel like I have to clean the kitchen constantly, one meal after another, pick up laundry, clean up toys, clean up spills, wash, dry, fold and put away laundry, make lunches, wipe bottoms, bathe children, etc.  These are things I can’t seem to check off the list, they’re always there calling my name, same thing over and over again. It can get overwhelming.  Satan loves to get new moms, overwhelmed moms and busy moms; new mom’s whose lives have just been changed drastically from a working wife to a new job, new title and new body, new hormones, and new environment. 

I’ve always wanted to make our house a home of love, safety, of Christ and His stories and of relaxation especially for my husband after a long day.  But I was struggling to feel like “I’ve made it”. 

What I have come to find out is when I start to drift down the path of exhaustion, confusion and uncertainty a common denominator is I haven’t spent time in the word or time with God.  The times I feel like “I’m on the right track” or “today it feels like a home” is when I spend my time and focus on God.  All the other things seem to fall in to place.  I seem to have more patience, more understanding, more energy, more clarity, and more healthy choices all around. 

This past December my sister-in-law gifted me this book called, “Beholding & Becoming The Art of Everyday Worship” by Ruth Chou Simons for my birthday and in it, the author states,

Faithfulness in the unremarkable daily tasks often goes unnoticed—but not to the God who numbers your days.  To our all-seeing God, everyday faithfulness is an act of worship and not just an act of survival.” pg. 38

What a great reminder to faithfully work and serve not for approval and acknowledgment from the world or our family but to “continually beholding, in their hearts, their true Master and the eternal treasure waiting for them as children of God“.  (Ruth Chou Simons: Beholding and Becoming The Art of Everyday Worship, pg. 38).   I also love what she continues to remind us “When we turn to Jesus for the forgiveness of our sin and trust Him for the new life we live to His glory, He breaks the bond of the idolatry of comfort, ease, pride, and unrealistic expectations.  He gives us a new mind and will through a softened heart that desires to please Him.  What God revealed here to the Israelites long before the birth of Christ ultimately found its fulfillment in the sacrificial death of Jesus, who enables us through the Spirit to walk with Him, obey and learn to love what must be done. ” (Ruth Chou Simons: Beholding and Becoming The Art of Everyday Worship, pg. 47). 

When we can daily remind ourselves of the love and truth of Jesus, how we were saved and rejoice; It keeps our focus where it should be.  Where the most important is highlighted.  Where our load is lifted and all we need, is to focus on following Christ.  It allows us to not be overwhelmed by the mess because there’s no clutter- it is just a mess from living.  It allows us to stop, play, interact and enjoy time with our children and have the conversations with them we wouldn’t otherwise.

To our wonderful God, Thank you for Jesus and His sacrifice, the continuing of your love, devotion, and grace to our human world.  May we all find our focus on you, to be devoted and faithful.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.

10 Ways to Show your Children Love

Love Day

In my house with a 2 and 4 years old, Love Day is what we call “Valentine’s Day”.  Every year Valentine’s Day makes me ponder, “how can I make the people I love, feel special, cared for, thought of, and loved”, especially my children who are being formed daily in their views on life.

What exactly does that look like?  Does it just last one day? What about a week? What about all year long?  One thing I want my children to know without a doubt is that their parents love them.   Does that mean giving them everything they ask for? Going above and beyond every day?  Do everything for them? Nope.  That’s not love.  That’s setting them up for failure.  God tells us to discipline, give structure and guidance, teach right from wrong, teach love and kindness.  

Prov. 13:4: 24

Whoever spares the rod hates their children,

but the one who loves their children is careful to discipline them.

Prov 29:15

A rod and a reprimand impart wisdom,

but a child left undisciplined disgraces its mother.

Discipline and structure are not a punishment.  They are preventive measures to help guide and protect them.  Just like the bible.  We all know how we are to behave.  There are expectations and there are consequences for actions.

Training should be done in love.

Prov 22: 6

Start children off on the way they should go,

and even when they are old they will not turn from it.

Hebrews 12:9

Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to

the Father of spirits and live!

Eph 6:4

Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

I want them to KNOW and to FEEL what it is like to have an unwavering unconditional love so that as they grow older they can KNOW and FEEL without a doubt that their God LOVES them, with an unwavering and unconditional love.  He is a great educator in how to show love to our children. 

 

1 Cor 13:4-7:  Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.  It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.  Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.  It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

 

Eph 3:18-19

may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and

to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

John 15:13

Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

May we all take a moment and feel God’s love for us, his sacrificial love. His deep love that surpasses all understanding. The grace that comes with the love.  Until we can fully accept and understand his love for us, will we fully be able to show that true love to our children? 

 

1 John 3:18 

Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.

We’ve all heard the saying,

“Actions speak louder than words”

 

So, here are 10 ways we can show our children we love them: 

  1. Look them in the eyes– Don’t be distracted by the laundry piling up on the floor, toys not put in the basket, the sibling running over. 
  2. Give them undivided attention– put down the phone, turn off the tv or music. 
  3. Listen to them– let them tell you their opinion, talk about what interests them, or their imaginary story that has no real facts in it but to them is completely real. 
  4. Take 5-15 minutes to read books to them or play at them at their level – Don’t be afraid to get silly, step in to their world.  
  5. Ask them if you can give them a big hug and hold for 20 seconds– this is proven to reduce stress. 
  6. Take them on a one on one date- to the dollar tree or to the park
  7. Love language– not sure? Take this quiz
  8. Dance party– Make a play list of their favorite songs and let loose. 
  9. Use your words– Love notes around the house or in their lunch box. Recognize their positive actions and state them aloud in front of other people.  They hear what we say and take it to heart as their identity. 
  10. Ask directly– Ask them what you do that lets them know you love them.

Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens,

your faithfulness to the skies.

5 Indoor Activities

5 Indoor Activities

It’s winter time and in the Northeast it can get pretty cold.   Sometimes just too cold to spend more than 20-30 minutes outside at a time.  So, we have to come up with indoor activities that will get my children’s bodies and minds moving enough to be able to fall asleep at night.  Also, like many there are no bible classes for our children and as it has always been important to teach our children at home it is now more than ever so important that they get their bible at home.  So, along with these activities are ideas on how to incorporate bible stories to teach to your children.  These can be as basic or in-depth as the age of your child allows. Below are 5 simple indoor activities that keep my children engaged mentally and physically.

 

1. Bath Time:

ANY time of the day.   Have a cranky baby? Bath time.  Messy toddler? Bath time.  Fighting siblings? Bath time.  Add some bubbles, cups and bowls, throw in a few plastics animals and you have a great time.     Bath time in general is great for hand/eye coordination (using cups to pour), sensory (hot or cold water, smell of soap, sound of water pouring), color recognition (only using blue toys), cause and effect (what happens when I splash in the water- it gets in my eyes), and float and sink.  After they have played a little and let out a little energy, take the time to share with them a bible story.  Jonah perhaps. So, remove the extra toys and use a boat, a person, a fish, the number 3 to help them focus on the story.

2. Obstacle Course:

Use majority of your house for this one.  Take the pillows off the couch and bed, use the kitchen table, beds, scooters, balls, baskets, etc.  Get creative! Have them crawl over the couch cushions, under the kitchen table, around the carpet, jumping over crayons, building a tower of ten blocks (you could draw or print numbers or designs you want them to emulate), etc.  This is probably the best one for gross-motor and getting their energy out.   They are using physical: fine and gross motor, mental: building and counting blocks, emotional: helping another person.  For the bible lesson, I chose the Good Samaritan.   If someone fall or gets hurt this is a great time to practice “being the Good Samaritan.  If you only have one child, take turns with your child being the one hurt and the good Samaritan.

3. Sensory Bin:

These can be filled with any base: sand, rice, beans, cotton balls, water, wrapping paper, ribbon, water beads, the options are endless.  Then you add the details like letters, numbers, animals.  A great resource for sensory bins is @busytoddler.  I love how open ended this one is.  You can fill a sensory bin with any items and it create a story.  For example, you could throw in animals and a boat and you have items to talk about Noah’s ark.  You could throw in numbers, plant/tree, star, animal, man, and you have days of creation.   If you use water, you can wash dishes or baby dolls and talk about baby Moses.  Don’t forget to make sure you are watching and sensory bin is developmentally safe for the child.

4. Blocks/Magnatiles:

If you haven’t seen Magnatiles, they are worth the investment (there are off brands on amazon and other sites, I have even seen them at Aldi).  They are plastic shapes that contain magnets that help them stick together.   You can build very simple designs to more intricate as they get older.   They learn stability, patience, shapes, colors, counting, etc.  You could print out pictures of city buildings or rural and suburban houses and have them copy the shape.
For the bible lesson I chose, Joshua and the Battle of Jericho.  Grab some people (toy or human), a toy trumpet (or make one using a paper towel roll or good old fashion paper, rolled up).

5. Homemade Play-dough:

Check out our instagram page @one.blessedmomma and on Melinda’s post she gives a recipe of how to make your own play-dough.  If you have a young one you can place the play-dough in a gallon size ziplock baggy, tape it down and let them push down and squish it.  If you are able to be right there beside them, feel confident to let them explore the actual play-dough.   As they get older you can incorporate more “tools”.  This doesn’t have to be anything special.  You can use plastic spoons, forks, knives, plastic animals, cookie cutters and plastic straws to roll out the dough.  All things that could be found in your own kitchen.  You don’t need to buy anything extra.   My girls also enjoy using silicone cupcake liners and candles to pretend to make cupcakes.  If you have letter cookie cutters you could make their name or just simply practice letter recognition.   If you don’t have the ABC cookie cutters you can roll small pieces into snakes and shape accordingly.  See FREEBIE below! The Bible lesson with Play-dough could be Joseph.  He was squashed by his brothers, molded by God through patience and became something beautiful.  He also had a coat of many colors.

5 Ways to be One Blessed Momma

5 Ways to be One Blessed Momma

It’s Christmas week which means it’s almost the end of the year.  This time of the year things slow down and it gives me the time to stop, pause, reflect, and make some changes where need be.   I assess what I have started that I want to continue like my sourdough starter, this blog, and my devotional book with my husband.  Then I think about what habits I have fallen into and want to change like staying up late because my daughter wakes up every 2-3 hours, not cleaning up the kitchen before going to bed, and wearing my PJ’s all day.  

Come along with me as I assess 5 blessings and remind myself of where I can make changes to strive to be One Blessed Momma with the blessings God has given me.   

1. Family

First, my CHILDREN are a blessing. One of which is currently squeezing my arm, snuggling up while I type this post. To have the opportunity to teach, mold, guide, and protect my girls is something I am very grateful for, and try not to take this responsibility lightly.   Additionally, we have the grace to make mistakes and learn from them.  This of which I am currently VERY thankful for.  We are in the testing of limits, not believing anything Mom says, 4 going on 14 stages.  I have to personally assess my triggers and what makes my frustration bubble because how I react will be how she reacts.  She’s also only been on this earth for four years and I have been on it for 33.  I should have a much better understanding and handle on what irks me.  

“Being a parent reminds me that when I do react in a way I am not proud of I am the one who is the example of how to correct them and make the changes.”

To be the living example of what a walk with Christ looks like.  It’s not perfect but we continually strive for it.  We get to teach our children about Christ and HIS sacrifice to us on a daily.   We practice through prayer, living life in conversation with God, and reading our bible together.  Something I want to do more of in front of my children.

Secondly, my HUSBAND.  He has always been there by my side.  He’s my support and strength.   I am very blessed to have such a hard working husband who I can grow closer to the Lord with.  With this blessing I strive to be a blessing by praying for my husband with his work and his daily choices.   Things as simple as making him a lunch, getting him his favorite snacks, making him a treat when he gets home.   Letting him know he is loved and appreciated for all his efforts.

Thirdly, my extended FAMILY.  My grandmother, parents, in-laws, siblings and their spouses, cousins, nephews, nieces, etc.   These people have been through many of life’s adventures with me and I am thankful to go through life knowing they will always be there for me.   As life gets busy I don’t always remember to send a video singing Happy Birthday or a quick Hello, but they know every time we talk that they are appreciated and loved. 

2. Home

My messy HOME.  Currently there are blankets and pillows on the floor from a fort, dishes on the table from lunch, and toys in the hallway from play time.  One very wise woman would state this quote at our ladies bible study that states, “my house is clean enough to be healthy and dirty enough to be happy”.   We are blessed to have so many toys that the question each year isn’t “do my children have enough toys” it’s “which ones can we donate and get rid of”.   I am very blessed to have a roof over my head and have clothes to wear.

When trying to make my home a blessing for my family I start by trying to have a place for all of our “stuff”.  Clutter is something that affects the way I function during the day.    If my counters and floors are cluttered my mind struggles to focus and process information like it is also very cluttered.   For myself, it is helpful to see open floors and clear tabletops.  Please don’t finish reading this blog post thinking I always have open floor and tabletops because that is far from it, but it is something I want to be more consistent with. 

When COVID is “over” I hope to have more get togethers and open our home up for get quality time with others.  Building those relationships God calls us to have with one another. 

3. Money

With our MONEY.   When my husband and I first got married we did not budget, nor knew how to truly create a budget.   5 years into our marriage we joined a DAVE RAMSEY Financial Peace class in person.  We are so thankful for this class because it helped us to get on the same page and to understand each other.  If you had a class around you to attend I would definitely recommend it.  If not, here’s the book he wrote: Total Money MakeoverClick on the link to view.  It’s currently on sale too!

We still aren’t perfect with our budget but we will be trying to get back into good budgeting in January.  I will attach the calendar we use to track our expenses, bills, grocery, activities, and meal planning.  

 

This is an example of what my calendar will look like for January.  This is not your typical Dave Ramsey Papers, but this is visual works for me.  You can budget by week, bi-weekly, or monthly.  Let me know in the comments if you will be joining me!

4. Health

Make HEALTHY choices with the food we eat and make.  Along with healthy choices of what we feed our eyes and ears from the TV, News, and our Phone.  One thing I have found very beneficial is when I leave my phone in the kitchen after a certain time at night.  Or take the weekend off.  If I find myself on an app too often I end up deleting it for a couple of weeks.  More importantly, it’s making sure my spiritual health is on target.   Man, do I need more growth in that.  I like to think we all have room to grow especially when it comes to our relationship with Christ.  When we settle and become stagnant is when we start to let our guards down and Satan quickly sneaks in, slow and consistent to make us comfortable with where we are and what we are doing. When we can take care of our minds, body, and spirit we can be in the best shape to worship God with all of our being and be a blessing to those around us.   

5. Blessings

Use our BLESSINGS.  My daughter loves to hear the story of the Good Samaritan.  So we talk about helping others often.  There are many struggling right now.  This has been a rough year.  This may be physically, mentally, emotionally or even all of the above.  We need to make sure we are checking in on our friends and family and asking the hard/deep questions.  Going a little above and beyond to let them know they are cared for.  Melinda did just that and talks about how she helped my family when we were in need and we were forever grateful.   Read about it here.  Doing something for someone when they are so overwhelmed by life, can really leave a lasting impact and give someone that boost they need to keep going.  Thanks Melinda

Ultimately our greatest Blessing is God, creator over all.  Who gave us Jesus, who was perfect in every way.  Who left his safe, comfortable home in heaven to be a sacrifice for OUR sins.  

A lot of people will stop and think about Jesus this time of the year.  His miraculously birth, perfect life, tragic death and triumphant arise.   May we all take a moment to reflect of his life, share His goodness, love and message to all around us.  I pray you get to have cherished time with those you love and make the most of every opportunity for those who may be searching for something bigger in this life.
